How to avoid: Always detangle on damp or saturated hair with a slip-providing conditioner or detangling agent. Work in small sections from the ends upward, progressively moving toward the root only after knots below are resolved. Wide-tooth combs or fingers cause less damage than fine-tooth tools.

Why it happens: Protective styles are commonly understood as inherently safe, which leads people to leave them in well beyond the point of benefit. Overly tight installation places traction stress on follicles, and extended wear allows matting, dryness, and single-strand knots to accumulate.

How to avoid: Follow installation-specific duration guidelines — most professionals recommend refreshing or removing braids, twists, and similar styles within six to eight weeks. Install with no discomfort or scalp tension, and continue moisturising the scalp and hair under the style throughout the wear period.

Neglecting regular trims under the assumption that trimming stunts growth.

Why it happens: A widely held misconception equates trimming with losing length. In reality, untrimmed split ends travel up the hair shaft over time, causing progressively worse breakage higher on the strand.

How to avoid: Trim as needed based on actual end condition, not on a fixed calendar. Examine your ends every two to three months; if they are splitting, fraying, or single-strand knotting, a small trim prevents far greater length loss from advancing damage.
